Nearly 9 in 10 households have a broadband connection
In 2019, 89% of the Flemish households had a broadband connection. In 2005 that share stood at 46%.
No separate figures are available for mobile and fixed broadband for 2018 and 2019. In 2017, the proportion of households with a fixed broadband connection (82%) was almost equal to the proportion of households with a broadband connection (86%). Furthermore, in 2017 38% of the Flemish households had a mobile broadband connection, compared to 4% in 2010.

Fixed and mobile broadband more common in households with children and with higher income
The proportion of households with a broadband connection is higher among households with children. While 96% of households with children had broadband in 2019, that percentage was 87% for households without children in the household. In 2017, this difference between households with and without children was bigger for mobile broadband than for fixed broadband.
98% of households with an income of at least 3,000 euro had broadband in 2019, while the figure for households with an income of no more than 1,199 euro was 66%. For fixed broadband and mobile broadband the difference between these two groups was about the same in 2017.

Flemish Region at EU average level for broadband in households
In 2019, the proportion of households with broadband was higher in the Flemish Region (89%) than in the Walloon Region (85%). In the Brussels-Capital Region 87% of households had broadband.
In 2019, broadband penetration in the Flemish Region was in line with the EU28 average. In the Netherlands, nearly every household (98%) had a broadband connection.
As to the proportion of households with a fixed broadband connection, there were only slight differences between the Belgian regions in 2017. In the Netherlands (98%) and Luxembourg (94%), almost every household had a fixed broadband connection. In the Flemish Region 82% of households had a fixed broadband connection.
In 2017, the proportion of households with a mobile broadband connection was higher in the Flemish Region (38%) than in the Brussels-Capital Region (24%) or in the Walloon Region (21%). In the EU28 that average was 42%. In Finland, the country with the highest percentage, 89% of the households had mobile broadband.

Fixed broadband connection (via wifi or wired): connection via telephone line (ADSL, VDSL, SHDSL, or other DSL type); via cable, fibre, Ethernet, PLC and so on; via satellite or via a hotspot (public wifi network) close to the home which is also accessible.
Mobile broadband connection (3G, 4G for example UMTS, LTE, mobile WiMAX): connection of a mobile phone network via a cell phone, smartphone or via another device with a USB key (dongle), cell phone or smartphone modem or with a card (for example, via a desktop, laptop or tablet with an integrated sim card).
